How will I know when my child is ready for sleep away camp?
Most families consider sleep away summer camps for children 8 years and older. However, age is not the only factor in determining when a child is ready for sleep away camp. Consider your child’s level of interest and desire to explore this summer camp option. Consider your child’s experiences away from home without you. Has your child slept out at a friend’s house or spent a weekend away from home? Always be positive and talk with your child about the benefits of going to sleep away camp.
Is it really better for my child to go longer, say three or four weeks?
Camp Directors offer the following as some of the top advantages to a longer stay or multiple sessions for your child:
- A period of time to adjust and settle in, then the rest to fully get into camp life.
- Stronger bonds and deeper connections with other campers and counselors.
- A chance to sample and participate in all the diverse activities and experiences offered.
- Increased opportunity to acquire skills and improve abilities.
- Time to develop greater independence and self-confidence.
- Fewer missed activities due to inclement weather.
- Fun and learning multiplied over time!
How can I feel assured that summer camp is safe?

My child wants to bring a Phone, GameBoy or iPod to camp. Is that okay?
Camp is designed for children to get a break from the pressures of the world, Camp will enforce the policy of no electronic equipment or equipment that requires the use of electrical outlets. These include, but are not limited to:
- CD/Tape/IPod/MP3 Players
- Radios or T.V.’s
- Electronic Games
- Cellular Phones or Pagers
- Laptop Computers or P.D.A.’s
- Hair dryers, Hair Straighteners, Curling Irons, etc.
If it is discovered that your child does have any of these items after you leave, the items will be locked up in the office until the camper checks out.
Is there more to summer camp than just fun and games?
Camp isn’t only about recreation. Camp is a unique place to learn and more than anything, camp teaches kids about life and how to live it well.
- Skills for school, work and life – Problem solving, self-discipline, perseverance, goal setting, time management and team building learned in a less-structured way.
- Discovery and exploration – A new interest sparked by a new environment or a confidence encouraged by friends and choices made at camp.
- Future career possibilities – A taste of what it’s like to be an actor, astronaut, athlete or astronomer.
- Learning through success and failure – Mistakes made in an encouraging environment (with no grades!) pushes children to strive, to test and master new skills.
- Specialty training – Valuable skill development in a number of activities transfers back to classroom work, extracurricular activities or athletic pursuits.
- Personal growth – Achievements at camp build self-esteem and self-confidence
Research has proven that camps provide the perfect environment for learning.
